Penn Ave will be made safer by making the street between 31st Street and 22nd Street one lane inbound.
A single lane will make it safer for walkers to cross the street and will create room for an inbound bike lane.
Parking on both sides of Penn Ave will be maintained.
No changes will extend into the core of the Strip District.
Project area
A narrower street of one lane will have a traffic calming effect and create safer conditions for all users of Penn Ave. Improved sight lines at intersections will make it easier for drivers and pedestrians to see oncoming traffic. Pedestrian crossings will also be shorter which will be particularly useful at intersections without signals. The added bike lane will be more safe and accessible for riders of all skill levels unlike the current shared lane.
This all culminates in a Penn Ave which will be calmer, safer, and more suitable as the "main street" of the rapidly developing Strip District. The neighborhood is increasingly residential and there is no slow down in sight for development. However, the industrial past of the Strip District means its infrastructure isn't suited for its new identity. As more people walk, ride, or drive on Penn Ave, there will be an increased chance of conflict. The Strip District is rapidly changing and it's infrastructure needs to change with it.
